Modern-Contemporary where the perspectives and characteristics of Insan Kamil are included
Descartes argued that the main problem in the philosophy of
knowledge is not about how humans can know, but about why humans can make
mistakes. People believe they know the unknown and do not know what is known,
which leads to error. It's all because of emotions, suspicion, arrogance, and
lack of focus.
If a person were given nature with all its qualities, he
would be perfect (kulfa) to realize all his actions and talents. Although the
“particular man” does not have all traits and manifestations, the “universal,
absolute man” does.
Remember that each person is an individual of this absolute
human being. This absolute human is a creature of God who functions as caliph
in the world from the day of Adam, the father of humanity, until the day of
Resurrection. He is the universal human soul that exists in everyone, as Allah
said, "We did not create or raise you all except as one soul.
The doctrine of insan kamil, which means universal or
perfect human, is a summary of the Islamic perspective on humans. This is a human
being whose complete essence and manifestation can be found in the Prophet
Muhammad. Meanwhile, Ibn Arabi and Jalal al-Din Rumi have provided good
explanations of this concept.
In sources of Islamic spirituality, there are two things
that are often discussed: tauhid (about God and His attributes) and insan kamil
(about humans and the universe). While monotheism speaks of the source and
origin of creatures, the latter speaks of how creatures emerge and
"return" to their Lord. Apart from that, it can be said that the
first is related to the creed of la ilaha illallah, while the second is related
to the creed of Muhammad Rasul Allah. Because he was the archetype of the
perfect man, Muhammad had all levels of existence within him.
Thoughts about Insan Kamil refer to the time when Islamic
culture or Islamic civilization began to rise or be resurrected in the form of
thoughts and interpretations that were appropriate to the current situation.
In contemporary times, the views and characteristics of
Insan Kamil are very different because of different thinker backgrounds. Four
contemporary Muslim philosophers—Muhammad Iqbal, Ali Shari'ati, Murthdha
Muthahhari, and Seyyed Hossein Nasr—talk about Insan Kamil.
